Asiedu Nketiah Declares NDC's Full Participation in Akwatia By-Election: “We’re Not Doing Anyone Favours”
The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has firmly stated that the party will actively contest the upcoming Akwatia by-election. He dismissed any suggestions from within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the NDC should refrain from participating to allow the NPP a chance to reclaim the seat.
Asiedu Nketiah, who is widely seen as a possible successor to President John Dramani Mahama, emphasized the importance of representation for the people of Akwatia, saying, “There is no such thing as 'too much'. Even with a two-thirds majority in Parliament, the people of Akwatia deserve their own voice—and we are committed to providing that.”
Speaking in an interview with Ambassador TV, monitored by MyNewsGh, he explained that the NDC's supporters in Akwatia expect nothing less than full participation. “Our base in Akwatia would not forgive us if we chose to stay out. They believe in our vision, and we must deliver for them,” he stated.
Known popularly as "General Mosquito," Asiedu Nketiah revealed that members of the NPP have approached him privately, hoping to persuade the NDC to step aside from the by-election. However, he said their appeal was firmly rejected.
“Some NPP folks have come to me quietly, asking us to step back and let them reclaim the seat. But I made it clear—we’re not doing anyone favours. We’ll contest the Akwatia seat, and we’re going to win,” he affirmed confidently.
The by-election has been necessitated by the unfortunate passing of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi. Although the Electoral Commission has yet to announce the official date and guidelines for the election, the NDC has already initiated its nomination process and is preparing for a vigorous campaign.
