Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has strongly criticized a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter) that advised Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their own ethnic group.
The social media user claimed Igbo women often falsely accuse their husbands of abusing their daughters and suggested that men should instead seek wives from East Africa, particularly Rwanda.
The post stated:
“Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying an Igbo woman who’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for a wife… Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda, and pick a damsel.”
Genevieve Nnaji, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, responded sharply, condemning the mindset behind the message.
She wrote:
“In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it.”
While some users argued that the original tweet was targeting false accusers rather than all Igbo women, Nnaji maintained her stance, warning against harmful generalizations and stereotyping.
She added:
“The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women.’”
Her response has sparked wide discussion online, with many praising her for speaking out against misogyny and ethnic profiling.
