Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to uphold the true essence of democracy, drawing from the life and sacrifices of Dr. J.B. Danquah as a reminder of the struggles made for the country’s freedom. Speaking at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi, Akufo-Addo marked the 60th anniversary of Danquah’s death, calling for an end to the ongoing efforts to undermine his contributions to Ghana’s political history.
“The memory of Danquah demands that we remain vigilant, ensuring that democracy in Ghana is not just a rhetorical idea but a lived reality,” Akufo-Addo stated, stressing the importance of active citizenship in maintaining democratic values.
The former president expressed his concern over how Danquah’s legacy continues to stir controversy, even decades after his death. He recalled the harsh conditions imposed by Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP government during Danquah’s burial in 1965, following his tragic death in solitary confinement at Nsawam Prison.
“Yet Dr. Danquah’s contribution to the development of Ghana remains a subject of unnecessary controversy, both in life and in death,” Akufo-Addo remarked, lamenting how the late statesman’s name continues to be unjustly tarnished.
Akufo-Addo also criticized the persistent negative portrayal of Danquah by certain elements of society, stating, “We are still witnesses, 60 years after his death, to the vicious name-calling that accompanies his mention by would-be responsible members of society.”
He encouraged Ghanaians to draw strength from Danquah’s resilience, recalling how the late scholar and politician remained steadfast even in the face of persecution.
