Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has strongly rebutted former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, following his recent comments about the implementation of the betting tax under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, a former Finance Minister and current Member of Parliament for Karaga, made these claims while addressing the press after the budget presentation. He asserted that the current government had never implemented the betting tax, which he found puzzling to be scrapped. According to him, it was misleading to announce the abolition of a tax that was never enforced.
"To claim that the betting tax was abolished when we never collected it is an attempt to deceive the people of Ghana," Dr. Adam remarked.
However, responding to these claims in an interview with Joy News, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson firmly disagreed, stating that Dr. Adam was clearly mistaken about the facts regarding the betting tax. Dr. Forson emphasized that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government had already collected over GH₵ 80 million from the tax.
"I don't think he is fully aware of the situation. My checks confirm that the betting tax was implemented in the second half of 2024, and the government has since generated more than GH₵ 80 million from it. The facts do not support his assertion," Dr. Forson clarified.
The exchange highlights growing discrepancies over the details of the betting tax policy between the former and current finance officials.
