Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has reaffirmed the association's unwavering opposition to illegal mining, urging the government to take decisive steps in addressing the crisis. Speaking at a press conference on March 13, 2025, at the Ghana International Press Centre, Dwumfour emphasized the importance of enforcing mining laws while urging journalists to contribute to the preservation of the nation’s heritage.

“The galamsey problem persists. Our forests, water bodies, and farmlands are being destroyed with reckless disregard for the environment, all in the name of gold mining,” Dwumfour remarked. He highlighted the severe deterioration of law and order in mining communities, where impunity reigns, resulting in human rights violations, forced land and farm seizures, and a lack of action from both local government authorities and traditional leaders.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in tackling the illegal mining crisis, Dwumfour called for continued vigilance. “The GJA applauds the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for its statement addressing the attacks on journalists and its commitment to tackling illegal mining. However, we urge the Ministry not to waver in its efforts, as the GJA will closely monitor both their actions and any lack thereof in the fight against galamsey,” he added.

Dwumfour also expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama's commitment to addressing the issue of illegal mining and reiterated the GJA's readiness to collaborate with the government. "We are encouraged by President Mahama's pledges to combat galamsey, and we trust that he will remain steadfast in fulfilling his promise to end illegal mining in the country. The GJA and the Media Coalition stand ready to offer full support in this critical mission. Mr. President, the time for action is NOW!"

In addition, Dwumfour underscored the significance of March as Ghana’s National Heritage Month, urging media professionals to utilize their platforms to promote and safeguard the nation’s cultural identity. "The media has a critical role in shaping our national identity and celebrating our cultural diversity. Through our various platforms, let us educate and inspire the public, fostering a greater appreciation for our heritage and ensuring its preservation for future generations."
