In a parliamentary session on Thursday, March 14, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the dismissal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare. Afenyo-Markin revealed that the news of Dampare’s sacking came as a surprise to many, with no formal appreciation or explanation provided for his service.
“We woke up to the news of IGP Dampare’s dismissal. We heard the President had removed him from office, and that COP Yonu would take over,” Afenyo-Markin stated during the session. He went on to criticize the lack of gratitude expressed in the official government communication regarding the matter. “The government spokesperson and the minister responsible for communication issued a statement announcing the President’s new appointment, but there was no acknowledgment of IGP Dampare’s contributions to the service.”
Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns over security in the vicinity of the Jubilee House, highlighting the inadequate street lighting along the roads leading to the Presidential Office. “The Minister for Greater Accra had promised that the streetlights would be operational, but the route leading to the Presidency remains poorly lit,” he remarked. “This is a serious security concern, especially in the heart of the city.”
In light of the situation, Afenyo-Markin called on the government to take immediate action. He urged the Leader of Government Business to schedule a meeting with the Minister for Greater Accra to address the issue and ensure adequate street lighting in the area surrounding the seat of government.
“We need to ensure proper security measures, and that includes well-lit streets in the vicinity of the Presidency,” he concluded.
