Dr. Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister, has made a heartfelt plea to individuals involved in illegal mining, urging them to halt their activities that are severely damaging Ghana's water bodies and forest reserves. In a post shared on social media, he invoked the name of God and appealed to the miners to stop their harmful actions.
Dr. Omane Boamah encouraged those interested in mining to pursue the proper legal channels by obtaining the necessary permits. In his Facebook post, he emphasized, "In the name of God & Ghana, stop galamsey! No human being resides in the forest reserves. Stay away from the forest reserves and galamsey. A word to the wise is enough!"
He reiterated that responsible mining practices must be followed, and those involved in illegal activities must desist immediately. “If you’re interested in mining, seek the necessary regulatory permits. We won’t talk much,” he stated firmly.
In the lead-up to the 2024 elections, Dr. Omane Boamah had previously blamed the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the illegal mining crisis. He accused members of the past administration, including government executives and District Chief Executives (DCEs), of benefiting from illegal mining operations. Dr. Omane Boamah alleged that these individuals were among those responsible for polluting water bodies, which has contributed to the challenges faced by responsible miners.
“We are aware of the individuals making noise about illegal mining. The leaders of these groups, including regional executives, ministers, and DCEs, have been implicated in the pollution of water bodies. These actions have led to the unfair targeting of responsible miners, and we will not allow this to continue," he asserted.
Dr. Omane Boamah’s call underscores the need for greater accountability and for individuals to operate within the legal framework of mining in Ghana to protect the environment and ensure sustainable practices for the future.
