Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has revealed a GH¢100 million allocation to provide monthly allowances to Assembly Members nationwide. This announcement was made during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement to Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting grassroots governance.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the government recognizes the vital role that Assembly Members play in local governance, conflict resolution, and community development. He stated, “Mr. Speaker, an amount of GH¢100 million has been allocated for the payment of monthly allowances to all Assembly Members.”

For years, Assembly Members have voiced concerns over the lack of financial support, despite their significant contributions. Many have relied on personal resources to carry out their duties, which has often hindered effective service delivery at the district level.

This allocation is part of a broader initiative by the Mahama administration to enhance governance structures, create job opportunities, and revitalize the economy. In addition to the allowances for Assembly Members, the budget includes several other key financial provisions, such as GH¢51.3 million as seed funding for the Women’s Development Bank, GH¢300 million for the National Apprenticeship Programme, GH¢100 million for the ‘Adwumawura’ Programme, and GH¢100 million for the National Coders Programme.

Dr. Forson also disclosed that additional resources have been set aside to address national challenges, including disaster relief for communities in Ketu South affected by tidal waves.

These financial commitments underscore the government’s efforts to empower local leaders, equip the youth with essential skills, and enhance economic productivity. With these allocations, Assembly Members will be better equipped to serve their communities and ensure that grassroots governance leads to tangible development.
