The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), Kofi Asare, has shared his perspective on the government's 2025 budget allocation to the education sector, praising it as "significant and unprecedented." While acknowledging the government's commitment to education funding, he raised concerns over the allocation for teacher trainee allowances, describing it as "wasteful expenditure."
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Asare expressed appreciation for the government's efforts to uncap the GETFund through amendments to the Earmarked Capping and Realignment Act of 2017. He highlighted that the government's allocation of approximately GHS145 million to the capitation grant, GHS3.5 billion to the Free SHS program, and over GHS500 million for textbooks for basic schools marks a notable investment in the education sector.
Asare emphasized, "These allocations are significant and unprecedented, and it is important to acknowledge them as such."
However, he criticized the decision to allocate more than GHS200 million for teacher trainee allowances, arguing that such spending does not contribute to a meaningful improvement in the education system. "I don’t think allocating over 200 million for teacher trainee allowances is a game-changer," he stated. "In fact, it represents a wasteful expenditure, and we urge the government to reconsider this approach."
