A British national, 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident in Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday. The accident occurred on a main road in the capital, where Frederick was struck by a vehicle from the motorcade of Kenyan President William Ruto.
Frederick, who had been visiting Kenya to see his sister and nephew, was fatally injured in the collision. Police have detained a driver who was operating a support vehicle within the president's convoy. Although the driver initially failed to stop after the accident, he has since been released on bail. Authorities confirmed that a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Friday to determine the exact cause of death, and the victim's next-of-kin have been notified.
A police spokesperson, Michael Muchiri, stated that the vehicle involved belonged to the regional administration and was assisting the presidential motorcade. Social media videos have shown the aftermath of the incident, with disturbing images of Frederick lying on the road covered in a Maasai Shuka, a traditional Kenyan shawl.
Following the investigation, the driver is expected to appear in court. Meanwhile, the UK High Commission has acknowledged the incident and is actively seeking further details. On the same day, President Ruto was engaged in public events nearby, continuing his political engagements in Nairobi.
