The Ghanaian government has officially reduced the cost of obtaining an ordinary passport, bringing the fee down from GHS 500 to GHS 350. This move is part of the government's ongoing efforts to make passports more affordable for citizens.

The announcement was made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, during a parliamentary session held on March 13, 2025. Minister Ablakwa emphasized that the government understands the concerns surrounding the high cost of passports and remains committed to ensuring affordability while upholding strict security standards.

“We are aware of the public concerns regarding the affordability of the new passport and are taking steps to keep the cost manageable while maintaining the necessary security features,” Minister Ablakwa said.

He further assured the public that additional steps would be taken to ensure the fee reduction is formalized. “In the coming days, we will be introducing an amendment to the fees and charges to make sure this reduction is legally endorsed. This is the new policy direction of the Mahama administration,” he explained.

This decision has been met with a positive response from many Ghanaians, particularly those who had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the high cost of acquiring a passport.
