Legal education advocate and former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Ansa-Asare, has accused Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of misrepresenting facts in the ongoing debate surrounding former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s recent actions.
Speaking on The KSM Show, as monitored by MyNewsGh, Ansa-Asare remarked:
“I think that the Honourable Afenyo-Markin was being economical with the truth, to say the least. First of all, I believe he misrepresented the factual situation.”
He argued that Afenyo-Markin’s defence of the former Chief Justice raises serious questions about her conduct while in office.
“Asking what the interest of the former Chief Justice was at the time is now giving Ghanaians an idea of what her actual interest was — to protect the government in power. That is what she is demonstrating now: to keep the NPP government in power,” he said.
Ansa-Asare also criticised the pace at which a Supreme Court panel was constituted under the former Chief Justice’s tenure to hear certain cases.
“It would have been unthinkable before then for the Supreme Court of Ghana to be impanelled so quickly. What was the urgency? Within a very short time, five justices had been selected to deal with the matter expeditiously.”
He further argued that former Chief Justice Torkornoo should refrain from influencing governance decisions after retirement.
“I think she must be ignored. The President must ignore her. She’s treating the office of Chief Justice as though it were her personal property.”
