Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, the Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, has announced a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction, citing concerns over rising costs and practices that deviate from Islamic principles. The ban, effective from March 5, 2025, follows consultations with Islamic clergy and aims to encourage more modest and affordable marriage ceremonies.
In an official letter, the Chief Imam explained that the decision was made to address the increasing financial burden of weddings, which has made it difficult for many young people to marry. He specifically condemned the practices of holding elaborate wedding receptions, multiple outfit changes by couples, male beauticians dressing the opposite sex, and extravagant dance parties commonly known as "jams."
Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu stressed the importance of adhering to Islamic traditions and called for the community's cooperation in enforcing the ban. He urged support from local leaders and stakeholders to ensure the directive’s full implementation.
The ban has been communicated to key figures, including the Bolewura (Paramount Chief of the Bole Traditional Area), the local police commander, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and media outlets such as Nkilgi FM and Yagbon FM.
