President John Dramani Mahama has explained the government's decision to hold Ghana's 68th Independence Day celebrations at the Flagstaff House instead of the traditional Black Star Square, citing the nation's current economic difficulties.
In a statement, Mahama highlighted the need for a more modest celebration, noting that the economic crisis has made it essential to reduce the scale of the event. "We are compelled to scale down the celebrations due to the economic challenges we are currently facing," he said.
The president emphasized that previous Independence Day celebrations involved substantial costs, including significant expenditures for logistics, security, and infrastructure, which placed a strain on the national budget. "In the past, large-scale celebrations have come at a considerable cost. Last year alone, we spent millions of Ghana cedis on the event, with estimates for this year being even higher," Mahama pointed out.
Despite the reduced scale of the event, Mahama stressed that the significance of Ghana's Independence remained unchanged. "Ghana's Independence is the most important milestone in our history. However, when circumstances call for a more practical approach, we must be willing to adapt and act accordingly," he remarked.
The president also underscored the importance of fiscal responsibility, noting that the savings from scaling down the event align with the government's broader commitment to responsible financial management.
