Three suspects remain on the run after a shooting at a pub in Toronto left 12 people injured, according to local police. The incident occurred at 10:39 PM on Friday (03:39 GMT Saturday) near Scarborough city center in eastern Toronto.
Police confirmed that six individuals sustained gunshot wounds, while others were injured by flying or shattered glass. Thankfully, the injuries were not life-threatening. The suspects, described as three men armed with an assault rifle and handguns, entered the pub and began firing indiscriminately. Authorities have stated that the motive for the attack remains unclear, and they are pursuing all possible leads.
"This was a brazen and reckless act of violence that has really shaken our community and the city," said Police Superintendent Paul MacIntyre, adding that law enforcement is using all available resources to apprehend the suspects. Earlier reports indicated that one suspect, wearing a black balaclava, was seen fleeing the scene in a silver car.
The victims, ranging in age from their 20s to mid-50s, were fortunate not to have suffered fatal injuries. “By the grace of God, there have been no fatalities,” Supt. MacIntyre remarked, calling it “extremely lucky.” He also expressed shock after seeing footage of the shooting, describing the moment as "horrible" and noting the shattered glass and bloodstains found throughout the pub, including in the basement, where some patrons hid before authorities arrived.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow shared her concerns on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “I am deeply troubled to hear reports of a shooting at a pub in Scarborough. This is an early and ongoing investigation—police will provide further details. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
The incident has drawn attention due to the high number of victims compared to other shooting events in the area. In 2024, data from the police division revealed that eight people were injured and two killed in shootings and firearm discharges. In 2023, Toronto saw 43 firearm-related fatalities.
While Canada experiences a significantly lower rate of firearm homicides than the United States—0.6 per 100,000 people compared to 4.5 per 100,000—incidents like this one have raised concerns in the city.
