The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has publicly apologized after a viral video showed a member of its Dress Code Compliance Team confronting a Level 100 female student.
The incident, which quickly circulated on social media, drew widespread criticism and raised concerns about the university’s approach to enforcing its dress code policy.
In an official statement released on July 3, 2025, UPSA described the conduct of the staff member involved as “unacceptable” and confirmed that an internal investigation had validated the events depicted in the video.
“No staff member is permitted to mistreat students under any circumstances,” the university stressed in its statement.
The Vice-Chancellor of UPSA personally reached out to the student to express sincere regret and to offer reassurance of the university’s support. The staff member in question has since issued a formal written apology, and the student responded with a letter to university leadership acknowledging her role in the situation.
In response to the incident, UPSA has committed to overhauling the enforcement of its dress code policy. This includes retraining members of the Dress Code Compliance Team to ensure respectful and professional engagement with students.
The university emphasized that its dress code—clearly outlined in the Student Handbook—is intended to prepare students for the professional and corporate world. However, UPSA also recognized the importance of applying this policy with greater empathy and fairness.
“UPSA stands for integrity, respect, and service. The well-being of our students remains our top priority,” the statement added.
UPSA concluded by reaffirming its dedication to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive academic environment, while maintaining high institutional standards.
