Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), to avoid becoming entangled in political disputes and to maintain the independence of his office. The statement was made during a session in Parliament on March 5, 2025, when Dr. Asiama appeared to address concerns regarding the financial implications of the BoG’s new headquarters.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of the central bank’s impartiality in economic matters, recalling a 2015 State of the Nation Address in which former President John Dramani Mahama highlighted concerns over the Bank of Ghana’s oversight of the banking sector. At that time, Dr. Asiama was serving as the deputy governor. Afenyo-Markin questioned whether the scrutiny of the central bank’s actions had become selective, suggesting the need for consistent and unbiased oversight.
He strongly advised Dr. Asiama to remain resistant to political pressures, warning, "Mr. Governor, don’t make yourself a tool for political football." The Minority Leader reiterated that the role of the central bank governor is crucial to the nation's economic health and must remain free from political influence.
In addition, Afenyo-Markin urged the Majority in Parliament to approach economic matters with greater caution, stressing that their decisions would have far-reaching implications for Ghana's financial stability.
